We don't carry YOUR size!
At least twice a year I face my worst nightmare: A formal invitation to a formal occasion requiring certain apparel. Most women love to shop for occasions - I hate it with a passion. I just turned 40, I am 5'1" and I weigh around 100 pounds, which translates into a clothing size 0.
For years, I have been listening to the woes of my Size 6 to Plus Size friends, who have been sharing their grievances about how hard it is to find clothes in their sizes. For years, I have been excluded from these discussions. As I was being informed by size 6 and above wearers, I could not relate to these issues, because, I was too skinny and too little to understand the heartaches of size 6 and above women. Well, not quite so:
The average woman's clothing store carries sizes starting at a size 4. Larger Sizes are readily available: Plus Size Stores or Plus Departments mushroom in Malls, Outlets, at Wal-Mart and even at Dollar Stores.
All along, I have been banned into the Kid's Section of Female Clothing where I may choose between the Size 0 Juniors selection of Hot Pants with tassels or fringes, assorted T-Shirts with cool prints such as "BOYS ARE HOT" across the training-bra-attired bosom to match the similar stylish, fabulous Jeans, sporting an embroidered "CHEERLEADER" across the rear end. For the past 20 years I have been fashion-deadlocked in cheap materials, wild cartoon characters, shapeless, waist less attires of the 12 to 14 year old teenage female.
OK, so I am short and I am little - but does this actually mean, I have no need for a pantsuit, or a cocktail dress, dare I even ask for a "career suit"?
Granted, the fashion industry has begun to somewhat copycat adult clothing for young girls - however - the materials used and the quality of the wear screams "Teenager in Disguise" and is not appropriate for a grown woman - not even a pint-size one. By the way, I used to wear a Junior Size 2, over the years I shrunk into a Size 0. In fact, I neither shrunk nor lost weight - the Fashion Industry decided to appeal to our size-obsessed nation by downsizing the numbers - same measurements - smaller number. At the rate we are going, I should be wearing a Size negative 3 at age 50!
On each of my numerous quests for dressy, age appropriate, fitting clothes of decent quality, I encountered what seemed to be the same dismayed sales associate eyeballing me from head to tow, frowning upon my frivolous request, informing me with a raised eyebrow: "Sorry, we don't carry YOUR size!" and finally finishing me off by referring me to the Petite Section. Where the smallest suit starts in a Size 2P - which is still 2 sizes too wide AND 2 inches too short. The same frowning sales associate in "petites" informs me, that I am really not petite - just little and elaborates, that petites refers to the lengths of the limbs, which are supposed to be disproportional in length compared to body - hence "petit".
This explains everything: I have age-wise outgrown the Juniors, waist, hip and weight-wise not yet grown into the Misses, are tragically too proportioned to be a Petit, definitely neither a Tall nor a Plus. Since there are no "Minus"-Stores, no "Mini-Departments, not even a "Little-and-Tiny"-Rack, I have officially entered the fashion twilight-zone - I am a clothing non-exist.
Thanks to the Internet, I found a few "Boutiques" halfway across the nation and on-line stores "specializing" in my dress size. However, this "specialized" service and the special price tag on any one outfit will put me in the poorhouse for the rest of the decade - not an option.
